Founded in 1990 in Targu Mures, Romania, SMURD is the pioneer of Air Medical Services in Eastern Europe, recognized throughout the world.
In a country about the size of Minnesota, SMURD has two Eurocopter EC-135 Air Ambulance helicopters, operating from its own air bases. SMURD plans to extend its fleet to eight helicopters on eight SMURD air bases in the near future.
Each of the SMURD helicopters runs an average of 500 primary interventions per year.
The Air Ambulances are staffed by highly trained medical flight crews. The standard crew is one pilot, one copilot, one emergency physician and one flight paramedic.
For disasters or situations with large numbers of casualties, SMURD partners with the Army and the Ministry of Interior and operates larger helicopters, SA-330 Puma, as Air Ambulance or for MedEvac missions.
SMURD Medical Transport Service operates on chartered planes operated by SMURD medical crews and has international transport capabilities.
